- Full-time (35 hours per week)
- Carry out research into the mechanisms driving subsurface heatwaves and how they interact with biogeochemical extremes
- Analyse large observational, reanalysis and model climate datasets
- Maintain a strong focus on communicating research findings by publishing in highly ranked journals and presenting to peers at local, national and global conferences
- Work collaboratively with other researchers in the team and in other groups as applicable to the project
- Contribute to CCRC academic activities such as student co-supervision, committee membership, leading workshops, etc
- Provide a limited amount of teaching support, including marking, demonstration and lecturing
- Report regularly on progress and outputs as stipulated by the project leader

- PhD in physical climate science, physical/biogeochemical oceanography
- High level analytical and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated programming skills in a Unix/Linux environment (e.g., Python, Matlab, bash)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to carry out scientific research independently and as part of a collaborative team
- Strong research and publication track record (relative to opportunity) in an area listed in the position summary

THIS ROLE IS LOCATED IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA.
The Research Associate will contribute to an ARC-funded research project on marine heatwaves. Marine heatwaves routinely cause major ecosystem damage potentially affecting valuable industries. The aim of this project is to extend our understanding to the workings of temperature extremes hidden below the ocean surface and how other concurrent ocean and terrestrial extremes interact with these marine heatwaves. The project will generate significant new knowledge around the mechanisms driving subsurface heatwaves and how they interact with biogeochemical extremes.
This project has two primary aims: 1) To characterize different types of subsurface MHWs, address how they are formed, quantify if they persist beyond the life of their visible surface signature, and examine how the subsurface ocean state prior to a MHW may provide a means to better predict these extreme events, and 2) examine the co-occurrence of compound temperature and biogeochemical extreme events, how prevalent they are, and how they interact. The Research Associate may work on either of both areas depending on their research interests.
